The Language of Signs — Shape & Colour System
You are on a hill road at dusk. A triangular sign appears — the text is faded and unreadable. You do not slow down. Two hundred metres later, there is a sharp bend you were not expecting. This module teaches you to read the shape before the text.
Three families, three shapes
India's road sign system uses shape and colour to communicate before you can read the words. IRC:67-2022 (Indian Roads Congress standard) defines three sign families — every one of the 56 signs belongs to exactly one. If you know the shape, you know the category. If you know the category, you know how to react — even on a faded, distant or partially obscured sign.
types of road sign in India
28 Mandatory · 21 Cautionary · 7 Informatory

A circular sign with a red border carries the force of law under MVA 1988. You must obey it. Ignoring any mandatory sign is an offence under Section 177 — fine up to ₹500 for a first offence.
A triangular sign warns of a hazard ahead — a bend, a crossing, a narrow road, animals. It does not command, but ignoring it is dangerous. Always slow down when you see a triangle.
Rectangular and square signs guide you — distances, facilities, directions. They inform rather than command. Knowing them helps you navigate an unfamiliar road, find fuel, or locate a hospital.
One from each family — spot the shape
Stop
Octagonal red — the only 8-sided sign in India. Shape alone tells you to stop even if the paint is faded.
Right Bend Ahead
Triangle with right-curving arrow — the road is telling you its own shape ahead.
Hospital
Blue square with H — H for Hospital, always hushed.
